Putting together a retro ar and having problem with barrel nut alignment and gas tube hole. After at least 2 hours of struggle and not getting the needed alignment I wanted I really want to break out the dremel and grind down one of the teeth. Is this a major no no. Torque is within range but just would not line up. The only way it does line up is below torque spec.

Did you lube the threads?

You can play with that forever.

If you install several different types of handguard, many made of aluminum, you'll see that torque specs are not always in the range of the mil-spec numbers. Sometimes by a lot. One handguard I played with had a limit of 20ft/lbs. It worked just fine, the barrel never fell off, and the rifle is decent for accurate.

Discussing the same with other experienced AR'ers, many feel that "tight" is tight enough, and there's some concern with over torqueing the barrel nut in some uppers.

My bet is that more than half of all barrel nuts never saw a torque wrench, judging from many discussions.
