What's your opinion as to how well IMR-3031 would work in a ".35 Whelen Magnum," which is my .358 Sierra Stomper? The Stomper has about 16-18% more case volume than does the Whelen. Would so much more powder generate too much pressure too fast to keep everything on the safe side?
Good day sir,
As some of the guys have said it could be a little fast, though I’m sure there would be usable loads for it.

I’m shooting about a half grain over max to get 2400fps out of a 22 inch barrel, with the 250gr Hotcor. That is of course out of my whelen. It is very accurate out of that gun. I’ve shot two 3 shot groups with it at 300yd, just to see how they drop at that range. I was supprised that one group was under 1 1/2 inch. and the other just about 3 inch. Not sure if that will ever happen again out of any gun, but was nice to see.

I believe your stomper is a neck down 375 ruger. If that is correct, I would think that some of the powders used for that would work well. As others have said, IMR 4350 would be one I would think would be good. I also saw that win 760 was used with the 375, and I would also give that a try.

I’m definitely not an expert with wildcat cartridges. Hopefully others can help more than I.

I gotta get some dies for my 30/30 and load a few... It's been years since I fired it, but my loads were 30 gr. of 3031 with 170 gr cast G/C bullets. Scary accurate, even from A NEF single shot...

In a rifle manufactured to withstand modern .45/70 Gov't pressure, IMR 3031 will transform that ~150 year-old cartridge in to a cartridge capable of killing every big game animal on Earth, including elephants.

I know that if I had to go into thick stuff to dispatch any bear, including polar bear, I'd want an original Marlin 1895 loaded with 400+ grain bullets.

338 Federal

Since my last post another use for this useless powder presented itself. Decided to give 3031 a try in my T3 in 338 Federal. The recommended top loads were the most compressed I have ever used.. Using the 200 gr. Speer bullet a series of groups where bullet holes cut resulted @ 100 yards. This powder is not useless here on the hill. Yes, 3031 should work well in 223.

I've used it in .223, .30-30, .308, and 8x57mm. In the latter two rounds, it's at its best with projectiles weighing 150gr. and less. There are other better-metering, more versatile powders for these rounds, now, but if all I had to run these cartridges on was IMR-3031, I'd STILL be in pretty darned good shape!

One of my principles is accuracy first. I guess you would say I LOVE accuracy and LIKE velocity. I want the best accuracy and "good enough" velocity. So 3031 works great for MY mindset, because very often it's a powder that shoots really accurately, but it neither delivers the highest velocity, nor does it perform its best when loaded to its own maximums (for me). I really like it in 30-06 with 150-grain bullets, but I've also had good luck using it with 165-grain bullets in my son's Savage.
Jake, I have to agree & your comments echoes that of my late father. He purchased a Husqvarna 30_06 back in the 1960s and with the help of a local gunsmith turned it into a tackdriver. I remember his favorite hunting load was the Sierra 150 grain flat base & a dose of IMR 3031. He took 3 mule deer and a nice black bear with that combination.

please help.

I started reloading not to long ago. I have plenty of uses for BLC2, & IMR 4895. I'm also planing on picking up some lever evolution, for 30-30. that being said, I bought some imr 3031 early on, when it was recommended by the salesman at the store(I no longer go to). I haven't even opened it yet, every cartridge I look at has several better recipes. I seams to be in the 90th percentile for developing pressure, but only the 60th-70th in velocity. I'm building cartridges from 110-200gr for 30-30, 308, & 7.62x54r (in.308). I am thinking of getting dies for 8x57, & 284win next.

what is the best use for this 3031?
IMR3031 is actually my first choice in one of the calibers you list. I used IMR3031 to shoot my lifetime best at 1,000 yards in .308 Win unlimited bench with a 168 gr HPBT Sierra International Match bullet. I found my charge with the traditional long range ladder test of 20 shots with charges ascending by 1% weight percentage to locate the sweet spot for the bullet and powder in my rifle. That powder was winning matches in the late 60s when I did well with it. 5 shots into 6.82" at 1,000 yards with a custom HiWall.

IMR3031 burns most efficiently with heavy for caliber bullets and that is where it excels in accuracy.
