I purchased a 30 round polymer magazine for my SKS rifle several years ago, when they were talking about banning high capacity magazines. I heard if I got the mag installed on my rifle before a certain date, I would be grandfathered in and my gun would still be legal. I installed the mag, fired the rifle a few time and put it away. I now have a renewed interest in shooting and dug out my old rifle and was cleaning it up. I recall I had a small, round, plastic object that allowed me to pull the spring on the magazine down so bullets would load easier. I cannot find this device and trying to push more than 10 rounds is almost impossible without it. Does anyone know the exact name of this device and if I can order it separately?

well I thought I was onto something but that zytel is detachable, this one is not. It feeds from the top, it is difficult after you load the first 10 rounds. Back when I bought it I was thinking I could take my time to load it with all 30 rounds and carry round several of those SKS clips for speed loading. Walking around with 30 in the gun and being able to load 10 at a time quickly would not be that bad, at least as a back up rifle in my collection

nope, you were right...it seems my old fixed magazine is obsolete now that high capacity mags are legal (in most places). The hard core SKS fans like the factory 10 fixed anyway and anyone wanting to modernize their SKS is going detachable, but my mag is still available and I can see the loading tool in these photos. It does not look like I will be finding the tool separate though and I am not investing in a completely new mag, I will just go backwards or look into a detachable

yea I bought the 30 round fixed mag back when it looked like 30 round mags were being outlawed. I guess it was a matter of principle, the anti gunners did not want me to have one so I wanted one. There were no detachable SKS mags back when I bought this SKS or I am sure I would have gone that way. It is funny back in the 90s no one seemed to care that I had a "Rancher Style" mini 14 with detachable 30 and 40 round mags but anti gunners hated the fact that I owned an SKS with a fixed 30 rounder. I have looked at the Tapco mags but read you might have to notch the wood to get them to fit properly in the SKS and I would not want to make my rife so I could not go backwards to the original mag, plus the Tapco's looks too difficult to carry around. To me the only reason for detachable mags is so you can reload quickly and I just do not see how you could carry around Tapco mags in a pouch like AK, AR or Mini 14 mags. That is just me though, I am glad Tapco has given the law abiding citizen another option for their SKS.

BTW density1 or anyone...how do those Tapco 20 round mags feed when loading? I can use a strip loader to push the first 10 rounds in my Zytel, but starting with round 11 it is a pain to push the rounds down from the top. That is why the loading tool is so handy, it lets you pull down the spring inside the mag through a slot in the side making the rest of the rounds drop down much smoother. How is round 11-20 while loading the Tapco? Does it get stiff and difficult to get them all in?

Webley, I guess the magazine I bought was only sold briefly during the ban scare, but once detachable mags hit the market everyone last interest in the high capacity fixed. I have not had any luck tracking down the loading tool I need, but was able to get my mag loaded by using a small Phillips screwdriver to pull the spring down in the side slot of the magazine. I may just go back to the factory 10 round mag and use the rifle as it was designed for. I can always use a different rifle if I really want to unload 30 or 40 rounds in a rapid fire.

Webley, yes bsn is right it is fun once and a while, however I would never do it at a crowded range or someplace where it disturbs people. I believe in gun safety as much as anyone and respect the rules of any range or gun club I visit. I guess it is just nice knowing it is there if I ever needed it. Kind of like the way I drive. I rarely speed, but I like knowing that extra power is there in an emergency
