Hey guys, my father knows a guy who is offering to sell him his Winchester Model 94 Ranger 30-30 which he claims has been shot less than 20 times. Neither my father nor I have seen the rifle yet, but he says it is in like new condition. I do not know much about lever action rifles, but he offered to sell it for $350, which i thought was the deal of the century. After looking around on gunbroker and some other websites, that is what most people are selling them for... so I am wondering, is there something wrong with these rifles? Are they not made as well or did they have a recall or something? My father is not looking to spend a ton, but he would rather spend one or two hundred more if it will get him a much better made 30-30. Thanks for any advice

That would be a fair price if the condition is as good as stated. The Ranger is an 'economy' version of the mod 94 and this one is most likely an angle eject with the crossbolt safety. These are not the most desirable Mod 94s but there has been an 'uptick' lately in the interest in lever action rifles - especially Mod 94s. Yes a couple hundred more would most likely put him into a 'pre 64' - but it would take some looking to find a good one for that money. Around here a nice post 64 (non-AE) can be found for around $350 and like a lot of guns the 'region' will set price and availability. If the Ranger is in good shape offer $325 and see what happens. $350 is not out of line however.
Thank you for the info. So is an angle eject not as desirable? In terms of being an "economy" rifle, is the barrel or anything that is crucial going to be different from the better post 64 model 94's, or is it mainly just the finish and cosmetics that wont be quite as nice? What are your thoughts on a newer Henry? I know they are a little more expensive, but are they significantly better?
