Hi guys just wondering if I can take my Franklin press and convert it to accommodate the Lee breech lock quick change die system, would this have to be re-machined to increase the size to accept the larger bushings, or maybe I'll just have to sell this one and buy something like the Lee Challenger Breech Lock. The Franklin press seems to actually be of better quality so I thought maybe a tool and die company could make the conversion but I'm not sure that's why I thought I would ask you guys first.

"...maybe I'll just have to sell this one and buy something like the Lee Challenger Breech Lock."

That would be the lower cost path.

And, I'd bet that within a few years you will have lost the fasination with the breech lock system.

I sure like the quick-change adaptors! They work great on the Breechlock press, but since I bought a Classic Cast, I use it exclusively and the quick-change adaptors are stored away.

I don't like it better than the adaptors. I love the speed and ease of the adaptors, but they don;t work in the Classic Cast. Since I like using the Classic Cast press so much, I no longer need the adaptors.

In other threads on other forums, I've said that IF I could re-design the Classic Cast press, I would make a three-tier mounting system for it: At its largest, it would handle the .50BMG and other large dies, then it would have a medium-sized opening to handle the quick-change adaptors, and finally the standard 7-14 opening for regular dies.

In your case, I wouldn;t bother trying to "change" the Franklin press, just get a Breechlock Challenger. While not as heavy duty as say a Rock Chucker or Lock-n-Load, and definitely not as solid and beastly as the Classic Cast, it's still a fine press and will load whatever you want.

Or even better yet!!!: think about a Lee Classic Turret press. It won;t use the adaptors, but it does handle the four-hole die sets. The dies stay set-up and adjusted all the time and the only time you have to change it is to change calibers, and then they too are set-up and ready to go by just popping in the 4-hole die bracket. Plus, you get the massiveness of the Classic Cast in a turret press............

Actually got a progressive that I bought a few years ago and is siting in the box just want to really feel comfortable with the signal stage first I only reloaded for 2 years. Say think I can sell the Franklin it's a really nice press just thought I would like the convenience of the Breechlock Challenger system.

The Lee Classic Cast, RCBS rockchucker, and Redding Big Boss, BBII and Ultramag presses are compatible with the Hornady LNL press conversion kit, so they can use Hornady's quick change die bushings.

Years ago I tried the LNL system. With as many die changes I do, thought it would be a great system. No so, with several presses and a coupla turrets it just did not work for me. I don't load so fast that I need a trick system to change dies. And setting them up is not a problem either. Skip the trick change over stuff and spend your money on better tooling or powder systems.

As much as I like the Lee quick-change adaptors, Jaguar's advice is still pretty solid. For a guy like me, who loads for only 4 calibers, screwing in and out the dies really isn;t a bother. The quick-change stuff is just pampering, I suppose.

Still though, had I to do it all over again, I would;ve got either or BOTH the Classic Cast and the Classic Turret presses, with the Turret having the dies all set up and ready to go by just popping in the 4-hole carrier system for that particular caliber.

I hope I did not give the wrong impression about turret presses. I do not have a press that takes any kind of quick change turret. What I have is no longer made and the quality is far better than some of the offerings out there now. A Texan 7 station turret and a 12 station Hollywood.

why oh why

get the lee classic cast turret press.it will do single stage or auto advance.the LNL is a way to get quick change in a obsolete design.I dont know why lee put his on the market.you have to buy adapters. yes you have to buy turrets, but then all dies are set up and you can put apowder measure on,which makes it like a progressive.I have two and have some with powder measures on permenently.
