Interested in opinions of the Remington 799, in particular its suitability for the foundation of a custom rifle. What about cartridge choices?

That one is a Zastava, modified short action; was also sold for a time as a charles Daly. Not a true Mauser 98, but believe it shares the same footprint; Jbelk can correct me if that is off base.

Simply because it's a bit of a rare bird for parts, may not be what you want to use, unless you don't mind having custom parts built. Only came in real short cartridges, so bolt face will be your limiting factor.

The 799 is a nice short action mauser style and relatively low cost. It does have some downsides; like the trigger and the rough bolt travel.

Building a true "custom rifle" is an expensive proposition. so I'd not pick a cheap action and one that has few commercially available aftermarket upgrades. If you are willing to put a lot of $$$ into that action, quality barrel, custom XXXX stock, custom trigger and some metal work; it would make a nice short action mauser style custom.

I'd probably pick a Rem 700, Win 70 or even a CZ action to build upon.

Just my thoughts.

As mentioned above, while most Mauser 98's are Large Ring actions, there have been quite a few Small Ring Mauser 98 actions (some old/military, some modern / commercially made).

The Small Ring Mauser 98's can be identified by their cock-on-opening bolt, and a front receiver ring that's flush with the LH receiver sidewall.

Husqvarna made their own on the 1970's/80's, and branded some dor Smith & Wesson; and there were about 3-4 different military SR M-98 actions like the 1910 or 1936 Mexican Mauser, the VZ-33, VZ33-40 (both Brno made and pretty good), the KAR-98 (be carefull), and the VZ-47 and ZG-47 Brno commercial versions.

Some real figures--

The Mexican 1910 has a front ring that's 1.270 in diameter. A CZ 527 is 1.200.

The difference between these parts and the rifle above is time and money.

Mauser used two barrel shank diameters: 1.1" and .980. True 'Small ring' actions have a small shank and a small front receiver ring. The KAR 98s have a large shank in a small ring and is barely thick enough to drill and tap. They have a BAD heat-treat reputation.

All the Mauser true small rings are very desirable for custom rifles, especially the 7x57 length G33-40, VZ-33 and 1910 Mexican. The most desirable of all small rings is the Kurtz action which was especially made for the .250 Sav and is considerably shorter than any other Mauser made. They're all small ring and many times have a square rear bridge.

The first pictures on this page http://www.hallowellco.com/bolt_action.htm shows a Kurtz action that's had considerable work done on it.

That's a Dakota 3 position safety made for all Model 98s.

Pete Grisel (Dakota co-founder) was one of the first makers of a 'from scratch' M70 safeties for Mausers but not the first. That distinction goes to Fred Wells in Prescott, AZ. From there, several were made in slightly different patterns. Wisner has one, Raybourn and Zufall used to make them, so did Blackburn. A five axis CNC mill and bar stock only needs a program to turn them out. Dakotas are cut very tight and allow fitting to the individual bolt with lapping compound. I like that so that's what I buy.

I invite anyone to closely examine a M98 bolt sleeve. It is an absolute engineering and manufacturing MARVEL!!
