Alright... I have been reloading .357mag as well as .45LC for my dad's and my revolvers...

Recently I bought a .308 and will be reloading for it.

We use a hornady lock n load progressive press.

Purchased .308 dies, two die set, full length.

I went to resize a few shells today to see how it all works.

My problem... I adjust the die as required.. hornady tells you to have the die touch the shell plate just before the press cams over.

If I do this... I literally have to use my entire body weight to push the handle down, and then on the down cycle the case gets wedged in the die and screws up the mouth of the case severely.

My impression was that you want to run the die allthe way from the top of the case to just before the ridge/lip...Is this wrong??? Do I only have to resize the case a certain part??? Reason I ask is because if I resize the case where the die only goes down to about 3/8" before the ridge it resizes fine, anymore and it gets really hard.

Next problem... For those of you familiar w/ the hornady dies they state that the depriming pin should sit 3/16"of an inch past the mouth of the die...If I set the die the way stated where there is 3/8" of the shell not resized, the diepriming pin does not touch the primer... and would have to stick down A LOT more than they say to.

Am I doing something wrong??? Or what?

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

MIke

All the numbers/names latch.. 308 win dies w/ 308 win brass.

When I remove the decapper and stick the shell inside it almost seems as though it reaches to top where it should sit before it bottoms out... though I can't exactly know for sure w/o trying it... but I will do that next(put the die into the press w/o the decapper and see what happens)

It was hard to push down only w/ this die/caliber... anything else works smooth... I of course did this once and then never again as I knew something was wrong.

To double check... when the die set says "full length" they mean a full length resize correct??? I don't by some chance have a neck sizer only do I??? I always thought neck sizers maxed out once they passed the neck by a few fractions of an inch.. not go down all the way til about 3/8" before the ridge/lip of the case.

The brass is brass for sure...

I have a mix of my brass which is federal and remington and then my friend gave me some of his hornday match grade brass that he bought new and just loaded once.

Well I figured it out... I guess it was the case lube issue... I purchased STP oil treatment like unclenick recommended and it works like a charm.. doesn't dent the top of the case and I can pull the die all the way to the bottom and decap w/o issues.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
