Tap shotgun barrel for choke tubes?

I've got a twenty some year old 870 that has a full choke barrel. Being my only shotgun I'd like to get the barrel tapped so it'll accept choke tubes so I'm not stuck with one pattern. Does anybody have any idea what the average cost on something like that might be? Surely it's less than a new barrel.

Miks Orlen is the best!

Mike Orlen does all our barrel work, mainly intalling choke tubes in shorten barrels. He is the very best! Go over to Shotgun World, signe in, and goto the gunsmithing sectoin. Mike is a moderator there and can help you.

You may want to check with Brownels. They used to sell a threaded choke adapter for just such a conversion. All you do is measure your bbl. diameter to find the right size of adapter needed, lathe a small portion at the muzzle of your Bbl. down to fit the inside dia. of the adapter and silver-solder the adapter to the Bbl. I've only seen one used once, but it worked great !!! As I recall, the adapters weren't very expensive either.

Before you buy a barrel or try to ream/thread one yourself....You might want to check out Mike Orlens' price list.
If you go onto the Shotgun World forum...he charges whloesale...about $35.00 plus shipping to those that have registered. Also check out his deal on cutting back a barrel.
He does the work on centers. We have had him do all our barrels for about four years now...excellent work!

Are you sure James? That sounds awful cheap considering Briley charges $400 plus shipping. I'd like to have the barrels on my Ruger Red Label threaded, Ruger wants $700 for this, but thats new barrels since they won't modify mine.

Dixie has had Mike do all our barrel work for years. Take a loolk...I just went and checked!

I've watched the work done to ream and thread a barrel for screw in chokes. That's a real bargain! Not something I'd really mess with myself; get the choke mis-aligned and who knows where the pattern will end up.....

Mike..you are so right indeed! There is no way to fix a mis-aligned job!..only cut back the barrel and do it again!
Mike Orlen is the only one we will let touch of barrels....and he has done plenty for Dixie and friends....all aligned perfect!
Mike also made me a Tri-Ball extended choke to to my numbers....3" tube with 2" parallel at .675"
