Hi,
Today I loaded some 12 ga shotshells with some mixed powders obtained by scavenging 12 ga shotshells.
The 12 ga is way to much recoil for me and thus normally use the 20 ga.
But with the possibility to reduce powder charge in 12 ga there is no real sense for an 20 ga (in the USA were you have plenty of reloading components).
12 ga reload data
All reloads were roll crimped with its closing cup in place in order the shot does not fall out.
First shot
approximatelly 1 oz #1 birdshot
12 grain mixed shotshell powder
Accuracy: 10" circle from 13 yards
Recoil: this load had an recoil similar to an 22 LR rifle. To less recoil IMO.
Unburnt powder: a lot.
Second shot
approximatelly 1 oz #1 birdshot
15.8 grain mixed shotshell powder
Accuracy: 10" circle from 13 yards again
Recoil: this load had an recoil a bit less than an 20 ga standard shotshell. I felt the push of the recoil.
Unburnt powder: none; but at the brink to have some unburnt powder.
This is a nice soft recoiling very accurate load.
Factory 12 ga shells have between 18 grain and 28 grain of its respective powder.
I wonder if around 16 grains that is the threshold for an 12 ga shotshell to fully burn the powder with an 1 oz load. I tried to stuff in as many #1 shot as could enter.
Both loads surprised me regards its accuracy; they hold the shot very well together with an Modified choke.
Has anyone experience with handloading low recoil 12 ga shotshells and which is the minimum of powder charge to have a decent but low recoiling load?
