It sounds normal. There is a separate sear that holds the hammer at cock. When the trigger is pulled it interacts with the sear and moves the sear out of it's engagement with the hammer.

Congradulations on your Winchester. I know my pre-64 Winchester 94 is the same way and it shoots just fine.

It's designed to have a lot of play in the trigger. It's a safety issue, it permits the trigger block safety to set properly. The trigger block safety is that little tab just behind the trigger that blocks the trigger until the lever is completely closed. The guys over on the Marlin Forum think it is a defect, they are not smart enough to know that all modern leverguns both Winchester and Marlin have the floppy trigger.

Yep, all, Pre/post, have "wiggle" result of design. Usually about 3/16 or so at full cock.
