I recently bought a Winchester Model 77 .22 autoloader with clip feed from a good friend who was dying from cancer. he let me have it for $50 as it had not been fired for a number of years. I gave it a good clean and lube and took it to my indoor range and found it to be a little tackdriver but it has feeding problems and the remington loads I was using were hanging up frequently, chambering about halfway before jamming. I am looking for an exploded diagram of this rifle so I can take it down further if I need to. I will try some other brands of ammo to see if it is brand sensitive (like my Ruger 22/45 which won't eat CCI's). If anyone has experience with this rifle and has some observations they'd care to share. I'd be most appreciative.

Marshall, drift the pin and the barrel separates from the receiver. Then pull back on the bolt handle enough to line up the notches cut into the base of the receiver and spread the spring loaded arms out of the bolt and gently ease them forward. The bolt then slides out of the receiver. I've attatched jpegs, I hope they load and are helpful.

Seeing the pictures of those '77 parts brings back fond memories, thanks for taking the time to include them. From what I can see, your '77 appears to be in great shape. Can't see any wear or major dings anywhere. Best wishes on getting this fine rifle back into service!

After a couple of emails to Numrich and a very helpful lady there by the name of Nancy, I was snailmailed a better blowup of the bolt assembly. With the aid of the blowup I was able to strip the bolt assembly down today and, sure enough, the firing pin has gone south. So, to be on the safe side I ordered a new pin and spring as well as a new extractor and spring. I will post again when I get it all reassembled and over to the range.

i've got a model 77 that was given to me years ago that i just dug out of the case. i was going to put a scope on it and use it for squirrels. is it worth anything or just a shooter. thanks. parkerizersportour said:

I was given my 77 by an old friend about 20 years ago. i put a scope on it and did do a little squirrel hunting with it and the accuracy was terrific. evidentally though feeding problems are common. the ONLY round that mine would feed reliably was the cci mini mag. everything else would stovepipe about every 5 rounds. i check out the mag, feed ramp and ejector. i never did figure out what was the problem and put it in the safe. I'm gonna get a new mag put the scope back on and try it again. its a beautiful little rifle and really feels good.sportour said:
I like you have a feeding problem. I didnt have any trouble breaking her down, I just took my time. she was filthy inside and out. Some one had varnished the whole firearm including the exposed area of the bolt. She was so dirty that I thought for sure when I put her back together she would be just fine. That was not the case. Although its not as bad (bullet/casings were getting bent) and she wasnt cocking for the next shot. Now it just seems to hang, bullet head in the chamber and bolt not coming forward. If I give a little push on the bolt handle she will go forward and into battery. If I find any more info I will surely pass it along thank you again Jim

Feedng Problems
I own a Winchester model 77 and have experienced some of the same feeding problems that almost everyone in this forum has. My gun hasn't been shot in 37 years, up until i first started shooting it a year and a half ago. I found out that a ridiculous amount of oil was put in the chamber to lube up the bolt, thinking that if the bolt was lubed no matter how long the gun sat still it would still be in working condition....WRONG...!!! The gun seems to work better dry, with some oil, just not a lot. I only started experiencing feed problems after i lubed the gun up after the first 49 rounds i shot. At that point, it almost seemed as if the superglued. I took it completely apart and soaked all of the internal parts in gunpowder solvent making sure there was not one single speck of powder, oil, or dirt of any kind anywhere on the entire weapon, and reassembled it. The bolt housing and the chamber that the bullet is seated in are now so incredibly clean if it was a tile floor you could eat your next meal off of it. I have since fired 56 rounds of Winchester .22 caliber ammunition, plus about 7 or 8 odd loads, and have not experienced a single malfunction yet. It's just an old gun that needs to be kept completely and utterly spotless, and it seems to work just fine.

I pulled out the ole 77 today when I went to sight in my Marlin 883, I've never had much luck with it but shot a whole mag today with no problems running CCI Blazers. One mag was all I needed to really appricate the power of the .22 Magnum and went back to shooting the Marlin.
I just picked up a 77 with the tube mag today from an older gentleman for $100. I took the stock off it and gave it a good cleaning and lube and "wow" what a beauty she is. I took the original Mossberg scope off of it and put on a little 2-7x Tasco. It shoots so nice and am looking forward to years of plinking and hunting.
It's been a while since I posted the original thread but I just got my 77 back from the gunsmith today after waiting several months. I made the mistake of trying to repair it myself with inadequate diagrams/information and the piece malfunctioned. Seems there's a return spring in the firing pin carrier that has to face the "right" direction or she won't run. Also, the firing pin did not protrude sufficiently. I've got to get it over to the range next week and hope that $160 was well spent.
My dad bought me a Winchester 77 with a Weaver scope for $60 . . . in 1974. At the time I was a marksman in the local Cadet corp and competed with an Anschutz indoors and a Sportco 44 on the range. I would go out plinking at my sister's farm once or twice a month. Fast forward 37 years and I have 2 sons of my own, both Call Of Duty heroes. We decided on the next visit to the farm we would dig out the 77 and let them punch some holes in paper targets. My brother-in-law had had it out the odd time for varmints but preferred his Mossberg, so it probably hadn't had a dozen rounds through it since I owned it, but had been cleaned every time it had been used. He even had half a brick of ammo I had bought for it decades ago. It was a fun day but we did have jamming (stovepipe?) problems. We were using bulk Federal that he had for the Mossberg.
My question. Is there a consensus on a 'good' ammo to stick with? All I ever used was CIL Imperial (discontinued long ago) and never had problems, except once I bought a brick of Vostok which jammed then the same way the Federal did now. The BIL asked if we should try the half box of CIL and I said no because it would be over 30 years old.
The other option is that it needs a good tear-down cleaning which has never been done since I got it but sounds like a daunting task.
PS: If you have an ammo to recommend, do you know if it's available in Canada?
